Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Mveso, Transkei, South Africa. At the age of nine, Mandela's father died of lung disease. After his father's death, Mandela was adopted by Chief Jongitaba Dalindyebo. Having been adopted by Jongitaba, Mandela then moved to Mqhekezweni, South Africa. Although Mandela was forced to move, he never forgot about his childhood home in Qunu, South Africa. Young Nelson Mandela quickly adapted to his new surroundings in Mqhekezweni. Nelson Mandela made many friends in Mqhekezweni, although he was unable to meet with them during the day due to him working for his mother and adoptive father in the fields of their property. Not long after Mandela and his family had moved to their new home, Jongitaba was relieved from his duties as a chief. Nelson and his family immediately lost almost all of their belongings. Livestock, land, and food were among them. Mandela and his mother then moved away and went to live with Mandela's Aunt's, Uncle's, and cousins. Instead of seeing them as aunts, uncles, and cousins, Mandela saw them as mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers. In his new home, females and males did not have to work as hard as children as the children in Qunu had. Much of the time, Mandela was able to play in the fields with the male population around the area in his new home. When Mandela was older, another, more wealthy chief adopted him. Mandela then left his mother and went to live with his new adoptive family. The home of his new father was fairly large. It was a great deal larger than his home with his family, which was fairly small. Mandela then was able to go to school. After having gone to a white taught school soon before, Mandela enrolled in Clarkebury Boarding Institute. Many different races of people attended Clarkebury. Indian, Spanish, and not many African Americans were among these students. As one of the few African Americans, Mandela was forced to ignore the racial slurs that came from the white students. Mandela, although African American, got many high scoring grades. He soon graduated from Clarkebury and went to many other schools that, as all others, were run and taught by white people. Mandela graduated from all of these schools with flying colors as well. When Mandela completed his final years of his education, he became a part of the African National Congress in 1942. Soon after joining the ANC, Mandela was arrested many times. He soon after was forced to serve twenty seven years in Johannesburg, South Africa. Nelson Mandela soon after was elected the first president of South Africa. After serving as president for several years, the presidential benefits were handed down to the next person in line. Not very long after being relieved of his presidential responsibilities, Mandela's life began coming to an end. He was becoming weaker everyday, and after one last speech, he was taken to a hospital where he later died of old age. Mandela took his last breath and declared dead on December 5, 2013. Although Mandela served years in prison most of his life, he still made a huge impact on, not only South Africa, but the whole world. Today, many things would be different if Mandela had not made most things possible for all races.
